167 ASSISTED DECISION-MAKING (CAPACITY) ACT 2015: KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES AMONG HOSPITAL DOCTORS

Abstract Background Assessing capacity is part of our daily practice, and an important pillar patient centred care. Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015, which due to commence in June 2022, act provide reform the law assist patients who require help making decisions a manner that will ensure their autonomy, dignity, best interests. This study aimed investigate knowledge, attitudes, confidence hospital doctors regarding this act. Methods was conducted using anonymous online survey completed by from all levels specialties tertiary hospital. The contained two sections, first asked questions on attitudes about assessment. second section practical scenarios test knowledge around new framework for decision support under Act. Results Of 670 consultants non-consultant (NCHD) surveyed, 11% response rate achieved (75 respondents), 44% were 56% NCHD. 43% reported lack assessing capacity. 92% felt they needed more training Also, 80% agreed have impact practice. thought carried out certain specialty (mostly Psychiatry Geriatrics). In 18-27% responders did not know what appropriate level was. each scenario, with exception one, most frequent correct one but responses widely distributed questions. Conclusion Despite representative sample, doctors’ seems improved compared previously studies. However, appears indicate significant gap further 2015 proposed next month. Mandatory should be considered HSE professional bodies.
